Review: Fresh Soy Face Cleanser

October 20, 2021

It’s not often that you see skincare products available in ‘jumbo’ sizes, but a few months back, I saw that Fresh had launched their cult classic Fresh Soy Face Cleanser in a huge 400ml pump bottle so I figured it was high time that I gave it a try. Personally, I avoid jumbo skincare because I know I won’t get through it before the expiry date (even if I love something, I like to play the field and constantly try new things) but it grabbed my interest enough to see what all the fuss was about and look into why people are opting for a near half litre of the stuff so I pipped for the much more manageable 50ml tube to try it out.

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser

What Makes It Special:
The Fresh Soy Face Cleanser is a runny, clear gel consistency that is pH balanced, meaning that it shouldn’t alter your skins’ base pH level of 5.5 and shouldn’t leave your skin with that tight or ‘stripped’ feeling that some cleansers might. The gel is enriched with amino acid-rich soy proteins that help to remove makeup and impurities and it contains Cucumber Extract and Rosewater for calming and balancing the skin.

Why I Like It:
This cleanser does two things really well, the first is that it does a bang-up job of taking off light makeup (to me light means tinted moisturiser and non-waterproof mascara) and the second is that it leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft and smooth. It has a beautiful gel texture that lightly bubbles and cuts through eye and light base makeup with ease, but doesn’t cause any discomfort or fogginess to my sensitive eyes either, which is fab. The Fresh Soy Face Cleanser can be used as both a first and/or second cleanse and it leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth, cleansed and prepped for the next steps of my routine. I love that this is gentle on my skin but still really effective, and that it rinses clean with just warm water. It also has a refreshing scent from the Cucumber Fruit Extract in the formulation.

What I Don’t Like About It:
For me, the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser is very much a warm weather cleanser. The combination of the light-gel consistency, the cucumber scent and the fact that it’s not a particularly hydrating cleanser (my combo skin likes added moisture at every stage) just scream Summer to me. It’s not a complaint, I just know I’ll appreciate this more in a couple of months’ time.

Application:
Apply a large pea-sized amount to a wet face and rub in circular motions until bubbles appear. Rub gently over eyes to remove eye makeup. Rinse clean with warm water and/or a face cloth. Can be used as a first and/or second cleanse.

Product Claims:
Melts away makeup – agree, but not heavy-duty makeup, just light base and regular/non-waterproof mascara
Maintains skin’s pH-balance – can’t be sure, but my skin doesn’t feel tight after using it
Soothes and softens – agree

Repurchase:
I think this will be a really good option for me in the warmer weather, and I think combination skins that sit more on the oily side all the way up to oily skin would probably enjoy this, but if you’re dry/dehydrated side there are better options out there for your skin (here, here and here). Although I can’t say I’d be adding a near half-litre of the stuff to my cart anytime soon, it’s a perfectly pleasant cleanser nonetheless that I’ll definitely be reaching for as a first cleanse as soon as the weather warms up.
