Review: Fenty Skin Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream

January 5, 2022

When it comes to beauty products, packaging *really* matter to me. The visual look, the physical feel, the hefty weight of a bottle, the clean sound of the lid snapping shut – it all makes a difference. But it’s rare that I find a product with innovative packaging, and equally exciting juice inside. Like many of the Fenty Skin product line-up, the overnight moisturiser is available as is, but they also offer refills for a slightly reduced price than the whole unit to encourage customers to keep re-purchasing these eco-friendly inserts. Recycling is great, but reducing that waste from the get-go and offering refillable packaging (in a hygienic and purse-friendly way) really is the way of the future.

Fenty Skin Instant Recovery Gel-Cream

What Makes It Special:
Gel-creams are probably my most preferred texture when it comes to moisturisers, they’re light enough that they feel comfortable on the skin year-round, but they typically absorb well and offer a good hydration surge too. The Fenty Skin Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream contains Hyaluronic Acid for added moisture retention, and Fenty Skin’s signature Kalahari Melon Oil and Baobab to support deep hydration and give skin a plump looking appearance. It also contains Niacinamide (helps balance skin and even skin tone), Glycerin (boosts hydration), Panthenol (softening and soothing), Watermelon Seed Oil (nourishing and clarifying), Lemon Myrtle Extract (balance oil production), Cactus Flower Extract (soothing and helps manage oil production), Aloe Leaf Juice (hydrates and soothes) and Jojoba Seed Oil (nourishes and aids in hydration). With continued use Fenty Skin Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream promises to brighten skin, even skin tone and improve skin elasticity.

Why I Like It:
Let’s start with the texture. It’s a cool, gel-cream texture that absorbs well but still feels rich and indulgent on the skin. The Fenty Skin Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream hydrates my skin and gives it such a glowy and juicy appearance. As mentioned, the packaging is reusable and refillable, as well as recyclable once you’re eventually done with it. I also like the scent, I was worried when I read online it was described as ‘cherry’ fragranced, which usually isn’t my favourite, but I’d describe this as more of a hint of non-descript, fresh fruit scent. Kinda like a glass of vaguely named ‘tropical’ juice, but very mild and it doesn’t linger.

Although this is named the ‘Overnight Recovery’ Gel-Cream I have been using this in the mornings too and my skin just loves it. It gives the most gorgeous glow and lush, dewy finish to my skin. Also, and this isn’t something I personally use because I constantly have short nails, but if you love a long talon like Rhianna herself does, then the tiny scoop that lives in the lid of the tub will be super handy. Those little spoons always disappear pretty quickly, but storing them in the lid of the product is really clever and saves you diving in with long nails. But back to the product inside, my combination skin loves the mix of balancing and hydrating ingredients so much, I genuinely think this will be a year-round favourite. My skin feels hydrated and comfortable in this heat, and looks dewy and glowy – the actual dream!

What I Don’t Like About It:
Nothing. I was worried that being refillable, it wouldn’t feel like it ‘sealed’ properly, but it feels just as secure and sturdy as any other tub of moisturiser. I was also a little hesitant when I realised that the cream had a warm beige tint to it (I’m super pale and avoid ‘tinted’ skincare because it’s always too dark/warm for me but also, I just hate the idea of makeup in my skincare), but the colour doesn’t translate on the skin at all. When the cream is applied, it melts in with a completely transparent but dewy finish.

Application:
Apply this at the end of your routine after your other products (cleanser, toner, serums then moisturiser). This is marketed as an evening product, but I’ve used this in the morning too, and it works just as well and there are no ingredients that make this a nighttime specific product (like Vitamin A for example).

Absolutely. I’ll definitely be picking up a refill shortly. I’ve been using this twice a day for a few weeks now and almost hit the halfway point of the pot. I can’t imagine not having it, especially in this warm weather.
